A Weekend on the Boards

In case you noticed my absence yesterday I’ll start by explaining that the weekend went by so fast I hardly realized it was Monday. By the time I did, I was in the car on my way home from my Mom’s at 9pm and I decided to just go home and spend my time with Nick. But I didn’t forget about my blog and I thought I’d get back to it by sharing the reason for my reluctance to jump into a new week.

It all comes down to the fact that I got to spend my Saturday down the Shore. I am a Jersey girl through and through so any bit of sunshine and free time means BEACH DAY. This was also part of my push to be more “outdoorsy” and spend my weekends being active. Probably the easiest way to do that, for me, is to be somewhere I love and that’s definitely the beach. While I mostly go to the Central Jersey shore towns (if you’re from NJ you understand the importance of having “your Shore”) but I asked Nick, “How far is Ocean City?” After a bit of googling, we realized it wasn’t too far at all and we packed a good healthy lunch opened the sunroof and hit the road.

A Weekend in Ocean City NJA strong cool breeze, fluffy white clouds, and bright sunshine, the day just could not be any nicer. My biggest temptation on a day like this is to find a nice outdoor cafe and sit down for a few drinks. I decided that, while that’s fun most of the time, I want to make more of my weekends. Ocean City, New Jersey is one of those old seaside resort towns that still adheres to the blue laws, laws that ban the sale of alcohol within the city limits. No bar temptations here! Instead you spend your day on “the boards” people watching, seagull dodging, riding the rides, and playing carnival games. I convinced Nick that we just had to ride bikes. This weekend was one of the few weekends you can actually ride your bike on the boardwalk in the good weather since they ban it in season. The bike man knew the way to my heart providing me with a pink bike with an overzealous bell and a basket for my purse.

The whole boardwalk is about 2.5 miles and we went up and back a few times. It was fun to take in the sights and sounds on top of a bike, which I haven’t done in forever. It was insanely windy too so that meant a lot of pushing up and back. Poor Nick had to put up with a lot of demands that day. I not only had to have my bike ride but then we went in search of the perfect photo booth. No trip to the boardwalk is complete without a photo booth picture.

I feel like photo booths used to be much less complicated. You squeezed in together and pulled the flimsy curtain closed, shoved a couple dollars into the slot and then you had about thirty seconds of quick pictures and then two minutes of agonizing wait time hoping that they turned out as cute as you thought they would. Usually, even if there was one or two bad frames they were still a hilarious memory. On Saturday there were too many options: holiday borders and postcard sizes and for one more dollar I could post it to Facebook. Just give me my two photo strips and call it a day. Am I getting old or what?

After a couple of laps up and down the boardwalk it started to get later and there’s only so much biking a girl can do. That’s when I coerced Nick into driving just a tad north to Atlantic City for dinner. I love how a completely dry town is about 20 minutes south of the East Coast sin city. Since Nick just couldn’t say no to my promise of tacos and salsa and maybe our first beer in about a week. That’s all it took and off we went.

How fantastic is Lucy the Elephant?! She lives in Margate, New Jersey and was originally a real estate gimmick built to attract people to then South Atlantic City. You can go inside her and see views of Margate, Atlantic City, and other areas of the Shore. We didn’t get a chance to go up but we’ve got the whole summer ahead of us!

For dinner we chose to have tacos at Distrito in the Revel Casino. There’s something so wonderful about eating your tacos from an indoor food truck on AstroTurf while a girl sits nearby with lit-up male parts on her head. That’s an advertisement for Atlantic City if I ever saw one. In all honesty I’m not a huge fan of AC; it’s a less glitzy version of Vegas and it can be scummy at times. I much prefer my quiet Shore spot. But when you get a view like the one above you can’t help but remember that this is the Shore and it’s simply the best.
