The biggest sporting event on television is happening this Sunday: the Super Bowl. Whether you’re watching it because you’re a Giants or Patriots fan or just like the commercials, it’s always a fun afternoon and evening. Every year my family has a party and we have all sorts of different foods but what I really love about the Super Bowl is the chili. My mom’s made a variety of different recipes over the years and I’ve been inspired to try my own. This recipe is a beef chili with a twist and super delicious not only for the Super Bowl but any day in the winter.
1 lb ground chuck
1/2 lb sweet Italian sausage
1 can red kidney beans, drained
1 can crushed tomatoes
1 medium onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 tbsp chili powder
2 tsp ground cumin
Salt and pepper
Over medium heat, begin browning your meat in a large pot. Break the meat into chucks as you stir, for about 5 minutes or until lightly browned. Stir in the onions and red pepper. Remove the sausage from its casing and stir small pieces into the mixture. Cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, continuing to break up the pieces of meat and sausage. The pieces of sausage should mostly cooked when you add the can of tomatoes, beans, garlic and all of the spices. Stir to combine all the ingredients. Cover the chili and allow to simmer for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
And there you have it! My favorite game day chili with the special twist of scrumptious sweet sausage. This chili goes perfectly with a nice slab of cornbread and I love mixing some Jiffy cornbread up while I’m letting the chili simmer. Enjoy it this Super Bowl Sunday or any chilly day this winter!
